What happened
The Victorian covered market was turned into an emergency mortuary after the Easter Tuesday raid. Two hundred and fifty-five bodies were brought here, laid out for relatives to identify. Many could not be.
Casualty note
The figure of 255 is bodies BROUGHT to this building from across the city. Nobody was killed here. It is recorded on this pin only because the building is where the city counted its dead.
Also worth knowing
On 21 April the unclaimed and unidentified dead were buried together in a public funeral. The Falls Road Baths served as a second mortuary, where 150 bodies lay for three days before a mass burial.
