What happened
Houses in the Royal Crescent were destroyed during the Baedeker raids of April 1942. The damaged sections were later reconstructed behind the surviving Georgian frontage.
Also worth knowing
The Baedeker raids were explicitly reprisal attacks on historic cities of cultural rather than military value, named after the German tourist guidebooks said to have been used to choose them. No street-level casualty figure is published for the Royal Crescent.
