What happened
A 500kg high explosive bomb struck the south side of Queen Square, damaging the frontage of the Francis Hotel and neighbouring buildings. The lost section of the John Wood the Elder terrace was later rebuilt.
Also worth knowing
The Bath Blitz Memorial Project records 118 bombs of 500kg dropped on Bath across the two nights, alongside 165 of 250kg, 58 of 50kg, 22 of 1,000kg, two of 1,800kg and 4,356 one-kilogram incendiaries. The project states plainly that these are best estimates, because the Civil Defence records were themselves destroyed in the bombing.
