What happened

The residential districts west and south of the centre, including Oldfield Park and Twerton, suffered the heaviest destruction and loss of life — not the Georgian set pieces the raids are remembered for. A memorial garden off Shaftesbury Road commemorates the dead.

Casualty note

417 people were killed across Bath, including 56 young children. That is a city-wide total, not a figure for this district. Other accounts say 'over 400'.

Also worth knowing

City-wide, 329 houses and shops were totally destroyed, around 700 more wrecked and roughly 1,900 further buildings damaged. A memorial service at this garden in 2008 was attended by Willi Schludecker, a former Luftwaffe pilot who had taken part in the raids.
