What happened
Contractors using a digger on the former Royal High Junior School site uncovered a suspected unexploded 500lb German bomb, 1.42 metres long. Bomb disposal teams built a barrier of 250 tonnes of sand around the device before removing it.
How it was made safe
Shielded behind 250 tonnes of sand, then removed under police escort and destroyed in a controlled explosion away from the city.
Evacuation
Up to 1,000 homes evacuated within a 300m exclusion zone; residents were moved to Bath Racecourse.
Also worth knowing
Later Bath finds include a suspected device at a primary school in July 2018 and a suspected WWII grenade recovered by a magnet fisher in December 2020.
