What happened
The final enemy shell to land on Kent struck the cliff above Barwick's Cave, one of Dover's deep cliff shelters, at 7.15pm. It passed through a grave in the cemetery above and bored a further 24 feet through solid chalk before detonating about seven feet above the shelter's reinforced concrete roof.
Casualty note
Patience Ransley, aged 63 — the last civilian death from cross-Channel shelling.
Also worth knowing
A 16-inch shell fired from the Lindemann Battery near Sangatte. The shelter ran through from Snargate Street to Durham Hill; the marker is the Snargate Street end.
