What happened
At about 9.30pm a single German bomber attacked the village of Banwell, north-east of Weston-super-Mare. Damage was reported at Banwell House, the post office and telephone exchange in the Narrows, and several houses and workshops.
Casualty note
Around 50 people were injured. The dead included PC Basil Stockbridge and Special Constable Ronald Clark.
Also worth knowing
Two German parachute land mines were also reported near Park Farm, Wolvershill, and two unexploded bombs near The Grange. This rests on a single local-history account and the casualty figure has not been cross-checked against an official record.
