What happened

A bomb struck the Central line booking hall and the blast travelled down the stairs and escalators onto the crowded platforms below. The explosion left a crater roughly 120 by 100 feet in the roadway, later bridged with a Bailey bridge to restore traffic.

Casualty note

56 killed and 69 seriously injured is the figure on the 2017 memorial plaque and in standard accounts. A higher figure of 160 has appeared in some recent commemorations and should be treated as contested.

Also worth knowing

The station was closed for two months.
