What happened

A 1,400kg bomb fell on Balham High Road above the northern end of the platform tunnels, collapsing the northbound tunnel and flooding it with earth and water from fractured mains and sewers. Hundreds of people were sheltering below at the time.

Casualty note

Sources give between 64 and 68 killed: the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records 66, other accounts give 68 (64 shelterers and four railway staff). More than 70 were injured.

The Northern line stayed closed between Tooting Bec and Clapham Common until 12 January 1941.
