What happened

Fifteen Focke-Wulf 190 fighter-bombers attacked Ashford in a low-level daylight raid at about ten in the morning, coming in out of the sun with the railway works as the primary target. Around 13,500kg of high explosive was dropped.

Casualty note

Sources give between 53 and 60 killed, with 150 to 250 injured. KentOnline's 2023 anniversary piece gives 53 killed and more than 150 injured.

Also worth knowing

Bombs also struck the Stanhay works, Hayward's garage, Snashall's bakery and the tannery at Dover Place, with damage along Milton, Star, Hardinge and Beaver Roads. Beaver Road School was destroyed but no children were killed there.
