What happened
A V-1 flying bomb, one of around 45 air-launched at the Manchester area on Christmas Eve 1944, struck a row of terraced houses on Abbey Hills Road. It was the worst of that night's impacts in the region.
Casualty note
27 killed and 49 seriously injured. The youngest was eighteen months old.
Also worth knowing
Air-launched from Heinkel bombers over the North Sea rather than fired from the French coast — by this stage the launch sites in northern France had been overrun. Post-war housing occupies the site and a plaque marks the spot.
